Mental health of prisoners

This themed visit was focused on the support and treatment that prisoners with a mental disorder receive in the Scottish Prison system. The aim of national themed visits is to enable us to assess and compare care and treatment for particular groups of people across Scotland. Our aim is to help services learn from good
practice and to respond to any issues that are identified. This report details our findings from our visits to all 15 Scottish Prison establishments which took place between January and March 2011.

The focus for our visits was not about whether these people should be in prison but about the care and treatment they receive. The services prisoners receive in prison have a big impact on the individual's capacity to recover.
