Missed opportunities

We visit people who have a mental illness or learning disability to ensure that they are getting the care and treatment they need and that is consistent with their rights. For this report we visited167 individuals with a diagnosis of either acquired brain
injury (ABI) or alcohol-related brain damage (ARBD), receiving care in NHS psychiatric wards, care homes, community services and supported tenancies.

We found that while most people are getting care that was adequate, there are problems with access to specialist assessment and with getting input into care planning from people with expertise and experience of working with people who have ABI or ARBD.

Those people that we visited who were receiving community-based care and support reported a better experience of care and a higher quality of life than people who were living in hosptials or care homes.

We have made a number of recommendations to NHS boards local authorities and the Scottish Government. For deails of who we visited, what we found and what we think needs to happen next -
