About these visits

One of the ways the Commission monitors individual care and treatment is through our visits programme.

We visit people in a range of setting throughout Scotland; at home, in hospital, or in any other setting where care and treatment is being delivered.  This report reflects our findings from visits to mental health admissions wards for older people across Scotland.

The aim of this national themed visit is to enable us to compare care and treatment for particular groups of people. Our aim is to help services to learn from good practice and to respond to any issues that are identified. The report provides an overivew of our findings from a series of visits that took place across Scotland between 4 June 2009 and 27 August 2009.

Our visits were announced in advance so that people who had particular concerns, including carers and relatives, could arrange to meet with us. We also asked people we met on the day of the visit about how their care and treatment was provided.  Where possible, we met with relatives and carers who happened to be in the ward at the time.

We took time to look around wards and paid attention to the physical enviroment and people's involvement in activities.  We completed questionnaires with people about the environment and the therpeutic activities provided.

We also examined at least two sets of care notes in each ward to look at the care being delivered. this was particularly important as the people we visited were not always well enough to express their views.
