New emergency orders, short-term orders, and nurse holding powers granted by Health Board Area, quarterly data

Summary

This report shows quarterly totals and annual rates of detention per 100,000 population for the year to 30/09/2008.Rates vary little form previous quarterly reports and continue to vary considerably between health boards. Excluding island areas (see notes), emergency detention rates vary from 13 (NHS Borders) to 51 (NHS Dumfries & Galloway)

Short-term detention rates vary from 42 (NHS Lanarkshire) to 77 (NHS Tayside) and 78 (NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde). Nurse holding powers continue to be used rarely with the highest rate being 6 in NHS Lothian and NHS Dumfries and Galloway.

Population figures used to calculate rates are projections for June 2007 (from General Register Office for Scotland), updated in July 2008.
