Orders granted by Local Authority of the Mental Health Officer

New emergency and short-term orders granted, by MHO Local Authority, quarterly data

Tables 23 - 54 show numbers of emergency and short-term orders for each local authority based on the employing authority of the mental health officer who signed the certificate.

Emergency detention certificates

Mental Health Officers were not recorded as having been consulted in 42% of emergency detention cases and therefore the local authority is not given. (see Table 55). There is considerable movement of MHO's between local authority areas, to provide out-of-hours services. For this reason, we have decided not to publish rates of emergency detentions by area, or to attempt to compare areas.

Short-term detentions

The rates of short-term orders granted have changed little in the quarter, remaining highly variable between local authority areas. They range from 28 per 100,000 population in North Lanarkshire, to 108 per 100,000 population in GlasgowCity (excluding the island authorities). GlasgowCity had the highest rates of short-term orders in all quarterly periods so far.

Notes on the data:

Rates are based on mid 2007 population estimates revised July 2008 (General Register Office for Scotland).
