Summary
This report shows quarterly totals and annual rates of detention per 100,000 population aged 16+ for the year to 30/09/2009. Rates vary little from previous quarterly reports and continue to vary considerably between health boards. Excluding island areas (see notes), emergency detention rates vary from 12 (NHS Borders) to 48 (Dumfries and Galloway) and 47 for (Greater Glasgow and Clyde).
Short-term detention rates vary from 39 (NHS Borders) to 82 (NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde). Nurse holding powers continue to be used rarely with the highest rate being Dumfries and Galloway with a rate of 13 followed by NHS Borders with a rate of 10.

Population figures used to calculate rates are projections for Mid 2008 over 16s (from General Register Office for Scotland), updated in April 2009.
